Acclaimed author Barbara Kingsolver is a native of Nicholas County. The middle child of Dr. and Mrs. Wendell Kingsolver, she studied biology in university but soon moved to writing. An early work, The Bean Trees, was followed by novels, essays and articles, including High Tide in Tucson, Prodigal Summer, The Poisonwood Bible, and other works of distinction.
