The Clay Wildlife Management Area has nearly 5,000 acres and is managed by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. A manager who lives on site may be reached by cell phone at (859) 473-0061. For general information, including hunting schedules and hunting safety courses, call toll-free (800) 858-1549. Information is also available on their web site, fw.ky.gov.
Access consists of old roads, trails and miles of maintained roads. The area offers a boat ramp on the Licking River, as well as public fishing on the river, on a lake, and on several small ponds. Primitive camping is also available all year round. Several hiking trails of various lengths cover rugged terrain and are open most of the year. Some of the trails are also used for horseback riding.
Wildlife inhabitants include squirrel, deer, dove, quail, grouse, rabbit, raccoon, otter, turkey, groundhog, and fox.
The various hunting seasons include deer by quota, turkey, dove, and small game, including rabbit, squirrel and quail. Quota hunting for released pheasants is also availabe by draw. Bow hunting is available with no quota. Hunting guides are available at various sites in the county, including the county clerk's office at the Nicholas County Courthouse and the Neal Welcome Center in Carlisle.
The Clay Farm was purchased by the Fish and Wildlife Department in the mid 1970's. There is no charge for any of the activities on the property.
